About

“Designed + crafted by hand to be a little bit different”

Oak House is a small, local wood craft business set up by me, Henry Pooler.

My love of working with wood could be classed by some as a bit of a “slow burner”. Having originally started out as a landscape gardener over 10 years ago, I’ve worked on a wide variety of projects including fencing, decking and raised beds, where I predominantly used treated sawn soft and hardwoods.

A few years ago, I was introduced to Rodas Irving, a woodworker and now a good friend, who I began to work with on various outdoor projects, constructing archways and pergolas from solid oak. It was whilst working on these projects that I realised how much I enjoyed working with wood and how happy it made me. During the winter of 2014, I was fortunate enough to work part time with Rodas in his workshop, assisting him on a wide range of projects, picking up various tips and tricks, learning a lot along the way. My love and passion for wood continued to grow over the following year and in April 2016, I finally started to produce some of my own products. Initial production began from my garden and dining table in my spare time between landscaping jobs. I am now fortunate enough to have my own workshop out in the Northamptonshire countryside, where I have the space to make all of my products.

Once in the workshop, I love the process of taking a rough, sawn solid piece of oak and passing it through the planer thicknesser to reveal the beautiful, individual grain laying underneath the surface. This is just the start of my making process, where I work carefully with each piece of oak to create unique, individually crafted products that can be cherished for years to come.

I feel very lucky to have the help and support of my creative other half, Claire Wilson Designs, throughout this whole process. She helps to turn my ideas into reality by creating sketches of each product for me to use in the workshop, as well designing my logo and doing all of my product photography.
